A new technology being developed by RCA, initially as an emergency power supply, may promise just that by sucking power from Wi-Fi signals and constantly recharging the device's battery.
You read that right. RCA has discovered a way to absorb power from increasingly ubiquitous Wi-Fi signals. This may prove to be the answer to all portable power issues, forever.
The first products will be AirPower chargers. These little pods (about the size of a flip phone) soak up residual power from any available Wi-Fi signal automatically to recharge its internal battery. Once fully charged (around five to six hours of Wi-Fi exposure), you can then recharge any low-power device via a USB connection in the same amount of time AC connections currently take. You can also use your device while AirPower charges it.
You never plug in the AirPower. Just leave it around wherever there's Wi-Fi and it takes in power without you doing anything. If you carry it around, it'll automatically suck up power as you pass through or linger in a hotspot.
How is this even possible? An RCA exec explained that it has something to do with regurgitating and converting the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi signal. We'll do our best to get a more comprehensive explanation in the coming days.

Works and recharges in any standard E27 or E25 screw-in light fitting. When fully charged, extend the telescopic handle and use it as a flashlight up to 4 hours. It uses just 2 watts of power to produce light equivalent to a 20W incandescent bulb. The LEDs will last up to 50,000 hours. Charge it minimum 5 hours. And a remote controller can operate the bulb on/off. In the winter, you can in your bed to shut down the light, no need to stand the cold.

I don't think it's a must-have, especially now that most smartphones with a LED camera flash can be used as flashlights, but in some cases it might be a good idea. Having this in an easily accessible lamp would mean you don't need an extra flashlight, and combining these two things does reduce consumption. Only when you really need it and don't already have an alternative.

In any case, it's a good example of how this new technology (well, not literally new - LEDs have been around forever - but new to mainstream lighting applications) can lead to innovation.

According to the market study, an estimated 136 million flashlights will be purchased in the United States this year, down slightly from 2012.
Flashlights with LED light source dominate the product mix. Additionally, the LED-based flashlights are forecast to continue displacing other light-source types of flashlights.
The study quantifies the use of rechargeable flashlights versus standard (non-rechargeable) flashlights. In 2013, standard flashlights outnumber rechargeable types by a ratio of 2:1.
The ElectroniCast study also segments the use of flashlights by end-user groups, including: Government use in Military/Law Enforcement/Emergency; other segments in Government; Commercial/Industrial; and Consumer applications.
In terms of value, the Commercial/Industrial end-user group is forecast to maintain the lead in relative market share during the forecast period (2012-2017); however, the Consumer category is forecast to maintain a dominant market share lead in term of volume (number of flashlight units).
